Listen to Obituary

Edgar “Ed” Thomas Chesterson, 90, passed away on January 4, 2026, in Indianapolis, Indiana. Born in Indianapolis on February 22, 1935, to Clarence Otto and Callie Bernice (Mudd) Chesterson, Ed was the eldest of seven siblings. Upon graduation from Cathedral High School, Ed began what was a long career working for the U.S. Post Office, a job he worked with pride and dedication. He married Maryann Lenahan on August 20, 1960, and was a dedicated father to three children: Carla Denise (Michael) Knight, Daniel Patrick (Debbie) Chesterson, and Joanne Louise (Patrick) Soller; grandfather to six: Lindsey (Christian) Kirkland, Ryan (Taylor) Soller, Kathleen Soller, Nathaniel (Grace) Chesterson, Elizabeth Soller, and Anna Chesterson; and great-grandfather to four.

Ed was a parishioner of St. Jude Catholic Church for over 50 years. Ed served in the Indiana National Guard and the U.S. Air Force Reserves. After moving out to the “country” on the southeast side of Indianapolis, Ed enjoyed taking care of the “farm” where he raised his children, spent countless hours cutting grass, and maintained the barns for Maryann’s zoo which consisted at various times of horses, llamas, sheep, goats, chickens, ducks, geese and many other animals (which he claimed to not like but which we all know that he did). He was an exceptional bowler, horseshoe pitcher, softball pitcher and euchre player. In later years he enjoyed attending the many sporting events of his grandchildren, travelling to Florida to visit his daughter and granddaughter, attending family functions with his siblings and many nieces and nephews, watching any sport (but particularly enjoyed cheering on the Colts, Pacers and Boilermakers), fishing, and making an occasional trip to the horse track to bet on the ponies. He belonged to the Postal Workers Union and enjoyed the company of many life-long friends that he made at the post office, and in retirement continued with weekly poker games at the postal union hall. Ed battled bravely with Parkinson’s disease for over 30 years, and was able to continue living at home with the loving assistance and care provided by Maryann.

In addition to his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Ed is survived by his sisters, Jodi (Jim) Erlenbaugh and Ruthann Kiemeyer and sister-in-law Carol Ann Chesterson. Ed was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Richard and Steve, and sisters Janet (Bob) Gates and Jean (Tom) Kenter.
