Doris Manning, 92, spent her final days alongside her beloved family, smiling to the end. She left this world on March 12, 2026, for her well-earned Heavenly rest. She is deeply missed.
Doris Ruth Fisher was born to Leon and Julia Fisher on August 1, 1933, in Walbridge, OH, a suburb of Toledo. While still young, she moved with her family, including older brother Don (Mary) to Wheeling, WV, where she graduated high school. She remained in Wheeling for college, attending West Liberty University. Her classmates crowned her beauty and kindness there by electing her their Homecoming Queen. She graduated with a secondary education degree, and after a few years of teaching high school Business English in Randolph, NY, she accepted a job as an administrative assistant at the Battelle Research Institute in Columbus, OH. There, a new young engineer—George Manning—caught her eye, and she invited him to join her for an Ohio State football game. Thus began a beautiful love story….
Doris and George married in 1959, remaining happily married for 62 years before Heaven called George home. Four years later, she, too, was called by her Lord and Savior to rejoin George and her loved ones who preceded her.
Along the way, Doris and George raised two children, Amy and Todd—first in Madison, OH, and later in Prospect, KY. Doris was a loving, devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Her favorite activities were attending her kids’ and grandchildren’s sports, church, music and school activities. She also kept busy as an active lay leader, teacher and choir member in the Methodist churches both in Madison and Crestwood, KY. She was also known for her delicious homemade chocolate chip cookies and fruit pies.
Her mother, father, brother and husband preceded her in death. She is survived by her daughter Amy (Dave) Martin of Fishers, IN and grandchildren Molly (Drew) Mishler of Williamsburg, VA; Craig (Claire) Martin of Bend, OR; Abby (Justin) Buchman of Virginia Beach, VA and Clay Martin of Fishers, IN plus 3 great-grandchildren (Charlotte, Jude, and “due any day!” Mishler). She is also survived by son Todd Manning, and grandchildren Julia, Ruthie and Nathan all of Gallatin, TN.
Her family is grateful for the legacy of faith, generosity, selflessness, and enduring love that she and George modeled throughout their lives, as well as the annual tradition of all the family gathering together at Hilton Head Island, SC that they started when their first grandchild was born and continues to this day.
