Doris Jean "Sally" Terhune

May 30, 1936 — July 20, 2020

Despite her belief that she would live forever, our mother, Doris Jean “Sally” Terhune, 84, died Monday, July 20, 2020 at her home in Pendleton, IN, with her daughters by her side. After 4 months of hospice, she left this life the way she lived it: on her own time table, on her own terms, and obstinate as always.

Known her whole life as Sally (her youngest daughter was 7 when she found out her mother’s real name was “Doris”), she was born May 30,1936 in Hartford City, Indiana, to Paul Ray Rice and Evelyn Leora (Devine) Rice. She grew up on the Southside and always believed it was the best place to grow up. She graduated from Hartford City High School in 1954 and lived in Hartford City most of her life, moving to Pendleton in 2006. Pendleton was where she lived, but when she talked of home, she always meant Hartford.

She was a mean bowler in her day, and was, by her own account, the best roller skater on the Southside. She would watch any televised sporting contest: during the initial COVID 19 upsurge, she watched televised cornhole tournaments in her desperation. She never missed a televised award ceremony, but her favorite was the Indy 500 Awards Banquet. She would be so annoyed that the race will be live cast this year, and she will miss it.

Her life’s work was feeding people, and much of Blackford County ate at her table or in her restaurant, Lucky Deano’s. She showed her love with meals she prepared and shared with her family and friends. If you came to her home and she tried to feed you, you know how difficult it was to say no. She was a force of nature.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her bothers Bobby Carmichael, John Rice and Phil Rice; and by her first daughter, Melody Gay Egly. She fiercely loved her daughters Minda (Falvio) Cysneiros (Anderson, IN); Michelle (Dee) Schwarzkopf (Hartford City, IN); and Stacey Terhune (Michael Fisher) (Pendleton, IN). She was an indulgent grandmother to Corey (Ronda) Schwarzkopf, Denver Schwarzkopf, Tristan (Kenny) Thompson and Claire Fisher. She leaves 7 great-grandaughters and one great-grandson to hear the incredible, sometimes unbelievable, stories about her life.

A private service was held at Indiana Funeral Care, Indianapolis, and the family will bury her ashes at the Hartford City I.O.O.F. Cemetery at a later date. Her family will later host a celebration of Sally’s life, with all the things she loved: good stories, good friends, and good food. Memorial contributions can be directed to the Blackford County Food Pantry, in care of Community Family Services, 1015 W. Washington Street, Hartford City, IN 47348, because Sally never wanted anyone go hungry. To honor Sally, her family asks that you sit and share a meal with your loved ones.
