David Duane Smith, 67, passed away on August 6, 2026, at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis, IN, after an unwavering battle with cancer. He was born on October 28, 1958, in Indianapolis to Claude Warrick Smith and Melvina (Dorton) Smith. After completing his education, he worked for much of his life in carpentry, which was his art.
Dave was a father, brother, and grandfather who had many joys in life. He enjoyed watching the Indianapolis Colts, IU Hoosiers, painting, music, carpentry, going to the “country”, and making people happy! Dave was a lifelong whistler, spontaneously piping out happy little tunes everywhere he went. He always wore a smile, and loved gabbing and joking with his family and his wonderful friends. And Dave had many friends because he really never met a stranger.
He is survived by his daughter, Meghan Allison Smith; granddaughter, Eliza (Hunter’s daughter); sister, Amy Smith (Jeff); his “Valentine,” Ms. Charlie (Charlotte) Shock; Aniko Smith (wife of late brother, Craig); many beloved cousins, nephews, and a niece; and a multitude of friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Claude and Melvina; son, Hunter; and brothers, Craig and Doug.
A Celebration of Life is planned on September 12, from 2 pm – 5 pm at Dawson’s on Main, in Speedway, Indiana.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Indy Humane animal shelter. https://tinyurl.com/Indy-Humane
