Dale Joseph Zapp

Dale Joseph Zapp, 100, of Greenwood, Indiana (formerly of Beech Grove, Indiana) passed away on August 6, 2026. He was born September 12, 1925 in Indianapolis to the late Walter and Marie (Gish) Zapp. He served in the Pacific during WWII as a Navy Air Crewman and received the Distinguished Flying Cross. He attended both Cathedral and Shortridge High Schools, and Butler University. He retired from Uniroyal and Firestone Building Products. An avid bridge player, Dale loved playing bridge with Patty as his partner and in later life at St. Roch with his son, Doug, including the day he died. He had a great knowledge of automobiles and was always willing to help anyone with car problems. He loved his family and enjoyed following all the grandchildren’s and great-grandchildren’s sports and activities.

Dale married Patricia “Patty” Rose Engle on September 17, 1949 and they were married for 72 years before Patty’s death in 2021. Dale is survived by his two sons, Douglas (Linda) and Patrick (Linda) Zapp, daughter-in-law, Karla Allen; 5 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Preceding him in death were his parents, Walter and Marie Zapp; his son, David Zapp and sister, Norma (Zapp) O’Brien.

As a member of Holy Name Catholic Church (89 N. 17th Avenue, Beech Grove, Indiana) since 1952, a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated there at 11 a.m. on Friday, August 14, 2026. Visitation will be from 10 a.m.-11 a.m. and burial will follow the Mass at Calvary Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Holy Name Catholic Church or St. Roch Catholic Church.
