Charles Rinehart Johnson, Sr., 84, died after a long illness on May 26, 2026, at home surrounded by his family. He was born on June 17, 1941, in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, the son of Rollin Post Johnson, Sr. and Sara Mildred Johnson (Rinehart), both having preceded him in death.

Charlie graduated from Linsly Military Institute while being active in the Navy Reserve. After graduation he enlisted in the U. S. Navy and was stationed on an aircraft carrier, the U.S.S. Champlain. While he was on the U.S.S. Champlain, one of the missions was to pick up Alan Shepard, the first American to travel in space. After the Navy, Charlie attended Western Pennsylvania Institute of Technology and obtained a degree in Drafting and Tool Die Design.

Charlie was married 46 years ago to Janis Kay Webber Johnson (Pastorius). He is survived by his brother, Rollin Post Johnson, Sr, sister-in-law, Eileen Walden Johnson, his children Catherine Ryder Chapman (Johnson), Charles Rinehart Johnson, Jr, and J. Kevin Webber, stepson. Charlie and Jan have seven grandchildren: Peyton Chapman, Kinsley Chapman, Kennedy Flottmeier (Johnson), Kia Johnson, Forrest Brannon Webber, Britt Elizabeth Webber, and Noelle Grace Webber; three nephews, Curtis Walden Johnson and Brett Charles Johnson, Ryan Edward Pastorius, and one niece, Megan Marie Smith (Pastorius).

A Celebration of Life will be held on June 6, 2026, at the Connection Pointe Christian Church, 12625 Cumberland Road, Fishers. Visitation will be from 1:00 to 2:00 P.M., with the service from 2:00 to 3:00. Please join us following the service for light refreshments. Those who may wish to remember Charlie in a special way may donate in his memory to the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, 1-800-525-5841. Please say your donation is in memory of Charles Rinehart Johnson, and direct the donation to patient care.
