Carl Eugene Herr, age 87, went to be with Jesus on the morning of November 5, 2023. He was a resident of Westminster Village North in Indianapolis, and formerly of Hershey and New Oxford, Pennsylvania.
Carl was born on April 3, 1936, the first of four children. He was the son of Lloyd and Martha (Cave) Herr, and brother of Robert, Arlene, and Kenneth.
Carl met his future wife, Alma, at the age of 16 and they were married for 67 years. Carl graduated from Pennsylvania State University in 1957, a year after he and Alma married. He would later receive a master’s degree from Penn State in 1968. They settled near Hershey, where they raised their two children, Vern and Eileen.
Carl’s life was dedicated to education and service. He was a teacher, administrator, and leader in his church and community. Carl’s first career was in the field of vocational agriculture, serving as an educator, a school principal, and an education consultant. He was also Executive Director of the Pennsylvania State Council of Vocational Education. He had a second career as the Executive Director of The Brethren Home, a senior retirement community in New Oxford, Pennsylvania.
Carl was a man of deep faith. He was a member of the Hanoverdale Church of the Brethren in Hershey, Pennsylvania where he taught Sunday School and served as a youth advisor, deacon, commission chairperson, and church moderator. After moving to New Oxford, he served as a teacher and board member at Bermudian Church of the Brethren.
Carl and Alma moved to Indiana in 1996 to be closer to family. Carl was a loving and devoted grandfather. “Poppa” enjoyed taking his grandchildren on educational trips and working together in his workshop.
Carl’s life of service continued in Indianapolis. He was a prominent figure at Geist Christian Church as a teacher, deacon, elder, men’s prayer group leader, and member of the Stephen Ministry team. He and Alma also led Prison Fellowship Ministry for over 14 years at the Correctional Facility in Pendleton, Indiana.
In 2016, Carl and Alma moved to Westminster Village North. There, Carl was active in the Resident’s Council and served as President. The family wishes to thank the Westminster Village staff for their kind and caring support over the years.
Carl is survived by his wife, Alma Ruth (Shenk), their children: Vern Herr (Victoria Martin Herr) of Norcross, Georgia and Eileen Herr (David Klinestiver) of Indianapolis, and their grandchildren: Natalie Herr of Marietta, GA, Brendan Herr of Nashville, TN, Daniel Klinestiver of Indianapolis, and Julia Klinestiver of New York, NY.
