Betty Colleen Rubin, an educator, dedicated community member, and lifelong learner, passed away peacefully on May 10, 2026, in Franklin, Indiana. Born on September 6, 1931, in Cleves, Ohio, Betty led a life marked by unwavering commitment to service, learning, and the cultivation of meaningful relationships.
During her career, Betty devoted herself to the education and well-being of others. She taught Special Education within the Indianapolis Public Schools, where her compassion and dedication greatly impacted countless students. Following her teaching career, she worked for 30 years as a salesperson for Niagra Therapy and Massage, demonstrating a steadfast work ethic and a genuine desire to assist others in improving their quality of life.
An inspirational figure, Betty’s commitment to personal growth was exemplified by her return to Indiana University after more than 50 years, proudly earning her Bachelor’s Degree in Communications in her seventies. This remarkable accomplishment stood as one of her proudest moments, reflecting her belief that learning is a lifelong pursuit.
Betty's enthusiasm for community involvement was evident in the many organizations she joined and contributed to during her life. She was an active member of the Crystal Cathedral Church in California, where she volunteered for their suicide prevention center for many years. She joined the Toastmasters Organization, fostering communication skills and confidence, as well as serving as past President of the Residents Council at the Masonic Home. Betty relished being at the heart of community activities, making numerous friendships along the way that enriched her journey. Her nephew, Charles "Chip" Pierson, fondly recounted “Aunt Betty” tales in community gatherings.
A lover of the sea, Betty held a deep affection for the beach and the ocean. Her homes was lovingly adorned with paintings of seagulls, oceans, and lighthouses, visually echoing her passion for the coastal landscape. In quieter moments, she found solace in reading, particularly historical biographies, which allowed her to connect with stories of the past.
Betty is survived by her children Lisa Linn (David), Lizann Ward, and Greg Byers (Mary); her grandchildren Angela Propes, Jason Propes (Amanda), April Propes, Gina Lauman (David), Alex Linn (Alexis), Sara Brannon (Zebedee), Dana Holder (Dustin), Seana Brannon, and Holly Helms (Ben); as well as eighteen great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind her cousin Janie Moore and her family, and her beloved nephew Charles "Chip" Pierson, along with many other treasured family members who will carry forward her legacy of warmth and generosity.
Betty was preceded in death by her first husband, Robert Byers, her second husband, Martin Rubin, her father John Porter, her mother Catherine Elizabeth (Brown) Porter, uncle Goebel Brown, aunt Martha Brown, cousin Juanita Keith and many other adored family and friends.
Throughout her life, Betty Colleen Rubin embodied the virtues of dedication, kindness, and perseverance. Her legacy is one of heartfelt service to others, an inspiration to those who knew her, and a shining example of the enduring power of lifelong learning and community engagement. She will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who were privileged to know her.
