Allen Lloyd Hanft

Allan Lloyd Hanft, 84, of Indianapolis, Indiana, passed away unexpectedly on May 19th, 2026, at home, with his wife by his side. 

Born on March 27th, 1942, in Belleville, Illinois, he was the child of Lester and Martha Hanft. He graduated from New Athens Community High School in 1960. 

Upon graduation from New Athens Community High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. He served in Texas and the Philippines and completed active duty in 1964. At that time, he went to work for Peabody Coal Company in their surveying department.

On April 30th, 1966, he married Janee (Lanter) Hanft, who has been his lifelong partner and friend. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on April 30th of this year. He spent a total of 26 years (1964 - 1990) in the coal industry in various surveying and engineering positions working for Peabody Coal Company, Arch Mineral Corporation, Parday Corporation and Brazil Coal and Clay Corporation. 

He became a licensed Indiana Professional Land Surveyor in 1988, after which he and Janee started their own surveying business, Hanft Surveys, part-time in 1988 and then full time in 1990. Their business was based in Indianapolis. Indiana, where they provided surveying services to various sites around the state. They retired in February of 2015. 

Allan will always be remembered for his great sense of humor, his innate kindness, and his pragmatic approach to the problems of life. He was a man of integrity, who tried always to live his life to the highest standards in all areas. 

He is survived by his wife, Janee, his sister, Kay Chitwood and husband, Bob, his brother, Don and wife, Yvette, his brother, Jon and wife Ruth Ann, nieces, nephews and cousins. Also, sister-in-law, Judy Weier and husband, Paul, and brother-in-law, Earl Lanter, and wife, Sue. 

He was preceded in death by his brother, Raymond Hanft, his wife, Beverly, and his dear parents.
