Lillian M O'Brien

March 26, 1930 — May 22, 2020

Lillian M. O’Brien, 90, of Indianapolis, died Friday, May 22, 2020. Born on March 26, 1930 to German-immigrant parents Eugene Mayer and Louise (Lisel) Hofelich in New York City, Lillian didn’t speak English until attending public school in Syracuse NY, where she grew up with her sister Norma. Developing a lifelong interest in language, she excelled in academics and served as a high school editorial writer for the local newspaper. After graduating from high school ahead of her class, Lillian worked as a legal secretary until meeting and marrying Donald O’Brien, with whom she raised six children, residing in several areas, including Watkins Glen NY, Seneca Falls NY, Dayton OH, Southfield MI, and Indianapolis IN.
Lillian made sure her children had well-rounded childhoods, with activities including sports, music, dance, art, theater, Scouts, church, day camp, visiting relatives, and a yearly family vacation. She was an avid reader and enjoyed crossword puzzles, crafts, holidays, decorating, and gardening. Lillian had a quick, dry sense of humor and frequently amused caretakers in her later years.
Mrs. O’Brien is survived by five children: Daniel, David, Dennis, and Douglas O’Brien, Laura Dugan; nine grandchildren: Corey, Erin, Shannon, Kimberly, Michael, Kyle, Quinn, Jake, Andy; five great-grandchildren: Kaitlyn, Ian, Tyler, Jacob, Isabella; and their respective spouses and partners. In addition, she is survived by her sister Norma Boxley and her son Curt.
Lillian is predeceased by her children’s father, Donald, two brothers, Eugene and Richard, and two children, Donald Quinn and Linda, affectionately known as Binta.
A memorial gathering will be announced in the near future.
